A tragic wrong-way crash on Florida’s Turnpike late on May 9, 2026, left one woman dead and several others injured, including two young children. The collision happened around 10:05 p.m. near mile marker 173.5 in Indian River County, just hours before Mother’s Day, adding heartbreak for the families involved. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 26-year-old Fort Pierce woman identified as Lauren was driving a white 2025 Kia K4 southbound in the northbound lanes when she collided head-on with a black 2023 Kia Pacifica carrying four occupants. The violent impact forced the Pacifica into another northbound vehicle, creating a devastating chain reaction crash.
Lauren was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency responders’ efforts. Her two children, ages 3 and 5, were passengers in her car. The 5-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the 3-year-old remained in critical condition after being rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. Authorities are still investigating why Lauren entered the highway going the wrong direction, examining possible factors such as impairment, distraction, fatigue, or a medical emergency.
The occupants of the Pacifica, including a 22-year-old driver and three female passengers, all survived with non-life-threatening injuries. A third vehicle from Mount Dora was also struck but its occupants escaped with only minor injuries. The crash shut down all northbound lanes for hours while crews cleared debris and investigators documented evidence. Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy as families cope with the emotional aftermath of the devastating collision.
